On Friday May 2 the Obama campaign held a free get out the vote event called Change Rocks. On this day it was held in Carrboro, NC, a small town just west of Chapel Hill. The outdoor rock concert featured local indie rock band Superchunk and the hotness of the moment Arcade Fire. It was unseasonably warm and several thousand people showed up for this free event to rock out and vote.

As Social Media evolves, the value of online conversations is becoming distributed and decentralized. The comments section of your blog, for example may not truly represent the community response or reaction because it may thrive across other disparate networks and communities, whether you’re aware of it or not.

The reward for participating and adding value to these conversations is Social Capital. The penalty for self-promotion, one-sided conversations, or lack of genuine participation is evident in the lack of apparent ROI as well as the lack of respect you’re granted.
I’m not sure how the web will change. But one thing is for sure… it will happen and quickly. Thinking about the tempo of change is good for staying nimble. HUGELY important for business, NGO, government, activists, and heck just about everyone.
Our mantra must be: Learn to listen and talk WITH others

Since the New York Times published the story Behind Military Analysts, the Pentagon’s Hidden Hand media like CNN, Fox News, and others have completely ignored this serious scandal. Obama mania has taken over North Carolina! I feel like I’ve had it for awhile. Sorta a rock star obsession saved for the likes of the Beatles and stuff. Yet in this case it isn’t so vapid. We have a real chance to elect a president that is not only better that Bush (duh!) but actually progressive! I have hope.
Now that NC is close to primary day we’re getting *some* props for our votes. Share this video with others. We have great one stop registration and voting here! I’ve already voted for Obama!
Oh yeah.. I have a ticket for the “Change Rocks” Superchunk concert for Obama in Carrboro on Friday May 2. Twas fun hanging out in line with friends.
If you come to Carrboro for this concert and you need to drive PLEASE park in a public lot. There is very little extra parking in town and tow trucks will be having a party too! ugh…
Just found this new blog called Barack Chapel Hill. Looking forward to more content and discussion. Very cool that it was made using a WordPress theme called Probama created by Category 4. Such a neat idea to create themes for candidates then let supporters use it. Must try this for a state wide North Carolina candidate some day. Distributed websites by diverse supporters!
Very interesting article from The New York Times called Behind Military Analysts, the Pentagon’s Hidden Hand. Read it. I feel that the closer we get to the end of the Bush administration the more of these types of articles we shall see. After Bush is gone my bet is we’ll hear a ton of stuff.
Yesterday I watched the Obama Town Hall event in Raleigh live. Didn’t make it there in person but I saw it via a live web cast on ustream.tv. Big thanks to Wayne Sutton for being there to share this with us. You can watch a copy of the video here.
Yeah the audio isn’t so great and the camera is shaky but so what. By the end of the event over 600 people “tuned in” at the same time and 45 people chatted together. The group experience made be feel as if I was there. The other chatters and I where together in a mutual experience that was funny, emotional, sarcastic, and thrilling.
To me it wasn’t about listening carefully to what Obama was saying at that moment. In my time-shifted audio and video world I expect to find a higher quality versions later. So for the moment I reveled in the virtual comradery of friends. Some I knew in person and others I met there.

For a few months now we’ve had a standing offer for people to drop by our house on Thursdays and cowork. A few people came by and hung out. Had some great conversations. But we’d love to have even more people over.
So next week we’re going to give it a try on Monday, April 21. If you’d like to get some work done in a quite space with free wifi, coffee, and snacks let me know. (That link is to my contact form.) I’ll send you directions. BTW – we have two nice cats.
The drive to cowork on Monday was an email from Robert who is from out of town and checking out the Triangle as a place to live. Lets how him how cool our tech community is.
Food for thought: Several people have sent me this link to a Web Worker Daily blog post called Coworking Evolved. Its some good examples of creative work ideas and experiments. Very cool stuff. It also reminds me how nimble I must be as a coworking business person in the future to continue to provide a valuable service.
