Tell Jim Rogers to Cancel Cliffside!

Recently Duke Energy received permission from the State of North Carolina to build a new coal fired power plant in Cliffside, North Carolina. Despite the facts that this new plant could be a major polluter of CO2, mercury, and evaporate 21 million gallons of water each day. You can find all the details here on NC Warn’s website.

Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers claims a giant coal-fired power plant would be “good for the environment.” This is nothing but green scamming. Watch this short video about his claims and the facts.

“Stopping this new plant is the best thing you can do to stop global warming.” – Dr. James Hansen, Director, NASA’s Goddard Institute

When you’re done contact Mr. Rogers and tell him to cancel Cliffside!

NCSBC 2008: Open Science Session Video

Part 1 of 4Here is around 80 minutes of video I shot at the 2008 North Carolina Science Blogging Conference. This session’s full title is Open Science: how the Web is changing the way science is done, written and published. The discussion leader was Dr.Hemai Parthasarathy (former editor at Nature and PLoS). Because of length and file size I split it up into four parts. Enjoy and please share on your site. You can get the embed code on the blip.tv video pages linked to bellow. I’m working on video for the Blogging public health/medicine session.

Voter Generated Video

techPresident has a cool list of their Favorite Videos of 2007. Voter generated videos that is. Check em out.

Poll: Bullshit Is Most Important Issue For 2008 Voters

So far my favorite is the Onion’s War for the Whitehouse coverage of all the presidential bullshit going on. Bullshit is no laughing matter. The very scholarly book On Bullshit lets us know how serious it is.

One of the most salient features of our culture is that there is so much bullshit. Everyone knows this. Each of us contributes his share. But we tend to take the situation for granted. Most people are rather confident of their ability to recognize bullshit and to avoid being taken in by it. So the phenomenon has not aroused much deliberate concern. We have no clear understanding of what bullshit is, why there is so much of it, or what functions it serves. And we lack a conscientiously developed appreciation of what it means to us. In other words, as Harry Frankfurt writes, “we have no theory.”

Because you know “bullshit is the deciding factor in most elections”. We need another book to explain political bullshit. How about “On Political Bullshit”?

Recently I’ve gone crazy with the web video embeds on this blog. Let me know if the site is loading slow.

Local Conversations WNCN – NBC 17 Interview

Community Building with Brian Russell from waynesutton12 on Vimeo

Wayne Sutton the Community Content Manager over at WNCN NBC 17‘s Local Conversations blog met me at the Open Eye Café in Carrboro for a quick video interview. He asked me about blogging and other social media. I shared my thoughts on how to start blogging and how this new social media would effect the 2008 presidential campaign.

We met at 12:30pm. Its now 4pm and the video is already up. (Thanks to the Town of Carrboro WiFi) Fun to watch Wayne work with the small HD video camera and a laptop. I’m really impressed with what Wayne is doing. Its a cool blend of Main Stream and Citizen Media.

Video: Why Jim Neal is going to Win

I went to a fundraiser for the Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Jim Neal. Shot a some video of him speaking. Its so great to have a progressive North Carolina Democrat running against Sen. Dole. I hope to get some more video of him as he campaigns. Stay tuned. (BTW… I donated my time and energy to produce this.)
