Tell Gov. Easley HB1587 is Bad

NCPIRG has a email campaign to ask Governor Easley to oppose HB1587. Public opposition is really mounting. Its time for our Governor to get involved. Lets ask him to stop HB1587. Here is some example language for your email from NCPIRG.

Dear Governor Easley,

North Carolinians need access to fast and reliable Internet service for communication and economic development.

Please oppose any legislation, including H1587, which will limit access to the Internet.

Sincerely,

You can use the form on the NCPIRG website if you like. But I recommend a phone call or physical letter. Elected officials sometimes ignore mass emails. Its much harder to ignore a phone call. You can even call after hours and leave a message. They’ll still listen to it.

Say No to House Bill 1587 Website

Say No to HB1587
There is a new website called Say No to House Bill 1587.

My name is Alan, I am a very concerned citizen of North Carolina. I have been very involved in both the Cable Industry and in the Information Technology field.

When I first started reading about House Bill 1587, I was appauled at how our state elected officials seem to believe that “big brother” telecommunication business has the best interests of North Carolina citizens in mind.

This site is being created and maintained as a portal of information as many towns, counties and industry leaders attempt to stop this Bill from knocking NC back into the technology stone-age.

I’m really looking forward to the collection of stuff about this horrible bill. We really need a long term grassroots movement to build up out of this. Telcos aren’t going to stop pressuring the legislature to create laws to protect their business. We can’t stop watching them. Not to mention the need for laws to protect us from bad bills like HB1587… Hey NC Representatives and Senators! Sponsor a bill to make sure all people in North Carolina are guarantied equal access to the Internet!

Business Partner Needed

I’m trying to start a new business providing professional shared working space with a cafe-like atmosphere. (aka a Coworking space) It is designed to be a welcoming environment for freelance professionals, home-office workers, entrepreneurs, start-up business owners, tech workers, graduate students, writers, architects, civil engineers, designers and others.

So far I’ve found space, written part of a business plan, done financial projections, done a TON of research, and found excited potential investors. Presently I’m doing market research.

I need a full working partner to help finish the business plan, sweat, and take personal risk. This business concept is *not* a one person job.

The location for this physical business will be Carrboro, North Carolina. Every community member I’ve told is excited and so are other local business people. Lots of creative telecommuters and home workers have expressed interest. People are tired of working in coffee shops and at home. They need professional level support from cool people. Help me help them.

PLEASE only respond if you have the time, energy, and passion to make this business happen. (My contact form is here.) I’m NOT looking for someone to-do a bunch of work for free. I’m looking for a full partner to share all fun, work, AND profit. Like any new start up business this may take years to pay off.

You also need to live near Carrboro. This partnership will require meeting often. Keep in mind once this gets going it could be a full time job.

I got to mention too that our personalities will have to mesh. We can only find this out by meeting and working together. So contact me and we’ll meet at Weaver Street or something.

I don’t mean to make the requirements impossibly hard. I just want to put it all out there. Honesty is very important to me. Thanks!

Three Meraki Minis

[flv:http://www.yesh.com/video/MerakiMinis2.flv 320 240] Three Meraki Minis just arrived. I’m going to place them around and see how well they work. Supposedly they’re easy to install and set up. This could be key for rapid network deployment. Man.. they are really small! More video about this project later.

Note: I shot this video using my Canon Elura 100. It was recorded to a 4GB SD card. (no tape) I then uploaded it to my laptop. Trimmed it. Then converted it to an flv file. (flash video) Thanks to the FLV Embed plugin and WordPress publishing this video was pretty quick.
