3D Paintings of van Gough: Virtual Dreams come True in Second Life

When I studied Sculpture and Painting in college I thought a lot about the intersection of painting and 3D objects. Combined was my dream of creating video as moving paintings. This video above, aka Machinima, called Watch the World(s) documents the creation of a virtual 3D copy of Vincent van Gough’s painting Stary Night.

This video is a work of art in of itself. To watch the 3D peice in Second Life appear is so moving and beautiful. Not to mention the song by Don McLean called Vincent (aka Starry Starry Night) as the sound track. What a perfect choice! Its all the work of Robbie Dingo. (that’s his “digital alter ego” a Second Life avatar..)

Cory Doctorow mentions another famous artist who attempted something similar,

What Robbie Dingo has done is something Akira Kurosawa only envisioned: brought Van Gough’s masterpiece to rich, three dimensional life, and for a brief moment, recast it as a living place.

This is a reference to a part of Kurosawa’s movie Dreams called Crows. (This movie is in my top 5 favorite movies of all time)

A brilliantly-colored vignette featuring director Martin Scorsese as Vincent Van Gogh. An art student finds himself inside the vibrant and sometimes chaotic world inside Van Gogh’s artwork, where he meets the artist in a field and converses with him. The student loses track of the artist (who is missing an ear and nearing the end of his life) and travels through other works trying to find him. Van Gogh’s painting Wheat Field with Crows is an important element in this dream.

Now we have a 3D world, Second Life, that made it easy to create a film/art PLACE you can exist in. Ever dream of living in a painting? Well now you can. Wow!

Joost beta testing

I got my beta tester email from Joost today. Its a new app for Windows and Intel Macs that plays TV on your computer. (PPC Mac and Linux version supposedly on the way) I downloaded it and immediately told people on Twitter. So far the full screen interface is great. But the choppy audio and video from my work and home broadband connections is annoying. Maybe that’ll improve.

It would be cool if you could download content to your HD and play it there. Not to steal the video content. But to watch it super smooth. Apple’s Front Row can play media on your HD and the trailer streaming is pretty smooth.

The part I’m really excited about are the mash ups people will build with the Joost API. (not quite out yet) I think this could be truly interactive TV come true. Only when users can create their own channels on Joost and upload content THEY created will it be an actual two way experience.

Dig this commercial. The graphics and script are amazing.

Take the Bloggers Bowling!

Ever since Anton announced that we we’re going to have a blogger meetup at a bowling alley I’ve been hearing this song in my head. Camper Van Beethoven had it right. We need to Take the Skinheads Bloggers Bowling!

Join the Chapel Hill bloggers this Wednesday as we bowl a few games at Mardi Gras Lanes (Hwy 54 near I-40). It’s a family night at the lanes — and Valentine’s Day to boot — so bring your loved ones and children. We’ll start at 6pm, but join us when you can. Mardi Gras has free wifi, and we’ll talk blogging and more as we bowl.

For clarity sake I don’t think Bloggers are like Skinheads. Bowling and Blogger both start with B. Plus we got a little angst to work out. But it is on Valentines day… weird. 😀 BTW, there maybe some live blogging/bowling tonight!

Update Alas… no live blogging while bowling. It was LOUD rock and glow family nite with no beer. Anton got online. He has some pics too. I was to busy putting a hurtn’ on those pins and my mouse wrist. Ouch!

Deleting Offending Comments on YouTube

Ever since Ruby and I posted a video response to John Edwards video announcement on YouTube I’ve been dealing with right wingers talking shit. So far I’ve deleted two comments and blocked the YouTube users.

The last person claimed I was censoring him for deleting his comment. Here is my response to that:

Let me just tell ya right wingers right now… I will delete and block you if you put up stupid stuff. Just because I posted a video comment about Edwards video doesn’t mean I’m going to vote for him. Sheesh. How freakn’ simple minded can you get!

I don’t have to hold myself to your standards. Publish your own video. Write your own blog. No one is stopping you from doing that. Removing comments isn’t censorship. I won’t fall for that false bait accusation!

With all the options out there for getting your voice heard how is deleting a comment censorship? From my point of view all is not allowed on my blog and web spaces. I’m partisan and biased. We all are. Some of more so than others for sure.

If someone wants to write their comments talking smack about me or my content then go ahead. Just do it on your own site. Its easy. I’ll even help you set up a space to do it. But, I won’t be bullied by other people online! I will not publicize angry rants with my blog for Google to index!

Matryomin

A description of this wonderful music by YouTube user sasayakanaru:

This electronic musical instrument is called “Matryomin“. This was developed by Japanese musician [Masami Takeuchi] ,made by the base of “Theremin” and Russian dall “Matryoshka“.The interval and the volume are controlled by holding up the hand in the antenna in the dall, and changing the distance of the antenna and the hand.

Big hat tip to Billy Sugarfix for sharing this with us on his blog.
